Google CEO Sundar Pichai publicly congratulated Elon Musk on the launch of Grok 4, the latest version of xAI’s conversational AI model. “Congrats on the launch, impressive progress!” Pichai posted, in response to Musk’s announcement on X.
It’s a brief message but a meaningful one. Musk replied with a “thanks” along with the folded hands emoji.
Grok 4 marks a major leap for Musk’s xAI initiative, which aims to challenge the dominance of OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic in the frontier model race. The new model reportedly features multimodal capabilities, faster response times, and deeper integration into X’s subscription ecosystem.
Google recently launched Gemini 2.5 and continues to expand its AI across Search, Workspace, and Android.
Meanwhile, Musk—who co-founded OpenAI but has become one of its fiercest critics—has positioned Grok as a more independent, less censored alternative to mainstream AI models.
On Grok 4’s capabilities, Musk, in a post on X, said “Grok 4 is at the point where it essentially never gets math/physics exam questions wrong, unless they are skillfully adversarial.” He also said that Grok “can identify errors or ambiguities in questions, then fix the error in the question or answer each variant of an ambiguous question.
