Elon Musk’s Grokipedia goes live after brief crash, aims to rival Wikipedia

Elon Musk’s xAI has quietly launched Grokipedia, an AI-powered encyclopedia that briefly went live on Monday before crashing due to heavy traffic. The site, now back online, claims to host over 885,000 articles as it positions itself as a “massive improvement over Wikipedia.”

Grokipedia, developed by Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI, is being billed as a more objective alternative to Wikipedia. Musk has long criticised the popular online encyclopedia for alleged bias and has described Grokipedia as “a necessary step towards the xAI goal of understanding the Universe.”

The platform’s launch follows a short delay, which Musk said was to “purge out the propaganda.” However, early visitors noticed that many entries are nearly identical to Wikipedia’s articles. The site acknowledges this with a disclaimer stating that “the content is adapted from Wikipedia, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 License.”

Musk has repeatedly accused Wikipedia of bias, claiming the crowd-sourced encyclopedia often reflects political or ideological leanings rather than objective facts. He’s mocked the platform for what he calls “propaganda editing,” suggesting certain narratives are promoted while others are suppressed. Musk’s criticism intensified after Wikipedia editors debated removing the Twitter Files page, which he cited as proof of censorship. He’s also taken aim at Wikipedia’s donation drives, sarcastically offering to give it a billion dollars if it renamed itself “Dickipedia.” His latest venture, Grokipedia, is a direct response to what he views as Wikipedia’s lack of neutrality.
