Elon Musk has said that coding as a profession could largely end by the end of 2026, as artificial intelligence systems become capable of generating machine-level code without human-written programming languages.
Speaking in a video clip that is now circulating online, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO said that by the end of this year, people may not need to “bother doing coding” because AI systems would be able to create binary code directly.
Why Musk believes AI will replace traditional coding
According to Musk, these AI models could produce more efficient binaries than traditional compilers, removing the need for developers to write source code and convert it into machine code.
Musk suggested that AI could bypass the conventional software development process altogether. Instead of writing code in languages such as C++ or Python, compiling it, and then translating it into machine-readable instructions,
AI systems could handle the full workflow independently. He indicated that the gap between an idea and its execution could shrink significantly as a result.
The comments come at a time when major technology companies are expanding the use of AI-assisted coding tools. Microsoft recently asked its engineers to test Claude Code alongside GitHub Copilot and provide feedback on performance. Nvidia has also given employees access to OpenAI Codex to support development tasks. These tools are designed to generate code snippets, debug software and improve productivity for engineers.
Musk has previously warned about artificial intelligence disrupting multiple industries, including software development. He has consistently argued that AI systems are advancing at a pace that could reshape job roles across sectors. His latest remarks reinforce his view that AI will not just assist programmers but could eventually replace traditional coding practices.
While many in the technology community see AI as a productivity enhancer rather than a replacement, Musk’s prediction points to a more fundamental shift. If AI systems begin producing optimized binaries without human-written code, the role of programmers may evolve from writing code to defining problems and validating AI-generated outputs.
Whether coding disappears entirely or transforms into a different discipline remains to be seen, but Musk’s timeline has intensified the debate around the future of software development.
