Tired of drivers jumping red lights, parking wherever they like, or weaving dangerously through traffic? Delhi Traffic Police is giving citizens a reason to take action and even get rewarded for it. With the Traffic Prahari app, reporting traffic violations could earn you up to Rs 50,000.
The app, which was relaunched on September 1, 2024, is designed to make roads safer by involving the public directly in traffic enforcement. And it’s already showing results. Every day, around 1,400 to 1,500 challans are issued based on complaints received through the app.
How the app works
Anyone with a smartphone can be part of the effort. Download Traffic Prahari from the Google Play Store, sign up with your mobile number and OTP, and start reporting. If you see someone breaking traffic rules, whether it’s red light jumping, wrong-side driving, illegal parking, or road rage, capture it in a photo or video and upload it through the app. Just make sure the footage clearly shows the timestamp and location.
Each report is reviewed by the Delhi Traffic Police. If it’s valid, a challan is issued to the violator. To keep the system fair, reports are verified carefully to avoid false or malicious complaints.
Why people are using it
Apart from helping improve road discipline, the app offers monthly cash prizes to users who submit the most valid reports. The top contributor is awarded Rs 50,000, followed by Rs 25,000 for second place, Rs 15,000 for third, and Rs 10,000 for fourth. For many, this is not just about civic duty. It's also a practical way to earn extra income.
A smarter approach to an old idea
Delhi has long struggled with unruly traffic, accidents, and rule-breaking drivers. Earlier versions of this programme like the Traffic Sentinel Scheme launched in 2015 laid the groundwork, but the new Prahari app brings in modern tech and wider accessibility.
DCP Traffic SK Singh says the app has added a crucial layer to traffic enforcement by involving the public. Even the city’s top leadership, including Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena, has backed the move, calling it a win for both road safety and civic engagement.
In a city where daily driving can feel like survival of the fittest, Traffic Prahari is turning smartphones into tools for change and putting some well-deserved cash back in citizens’ hands.
