Chrome for Android gets a makeover with a new design, here's what's changed

Chrome for Android has fully adopted Google’s new Material You Expressive design, introducing rounded elements, dynamic colours, and visual polish without changing button sizes. The update, now part of Chrome 141, enhances visual consistency with other Google apps while retaining Chrome’s compact and familiar layout.

Google has finished rolling out the new Material You (M3) Expressive redesign for Chrome on Android, marking the end of a gradual update process that started in late August. The update aligns Chrome’s interface with the latest Material You design principles, following similar updates that recently arrived for other Google apps.

The most noticeable change appears in the three-dot overflow menu. Common actions such as Forward, Bookmark, Download, Site Info, and Refresh are now displayed in circular containers at the top of the menu, giving the interface a cleaner and more modern feel. When users visit a bookmarked page, the star icon changes its background into a rounded square — a subtle but effective touch that helps visually distinguish saved pages.

On the Tab Grid, the ‘New Tab’ button now sits inside a rounded square with a Dynamic Color background that adapts to the system theme. The tab switcher, Incognito mode toggle, and Group selector each get their own container, making it easier to identify the current section. In addition, Tab Groups are now colour-coded to match the theme you’ve chosen, which improves visual consistency and usability.

Some users have also started seeing changes in the address bar. Chrome is testing a segmented loading progress bar with softly rounded edges, though this feature isn’t yet available to everyone. It’s a minor aesthetic shift that hints at Chrome’s ongoing evolution toward a more fluid and expressive interface.
