Apple is preparing to launch the AirPods Pro 3 tomorrow, but early reports suggest users should not expect major upgrades in audio quality or Active Noise Cancellation. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has indicated that while some improvements may arrive through hardware changes, the biggest update in this generation will be health-related rather than sound-focused.

The AirPods Pro 3 will feature built-in heart rate tracking, a capability Apple earlier introduced with the Powerbeats Pro 2. The earbuds will use LED optical sensors that pulse to detect blood flow, providing real-time heart rate data. This information is expected to sync with Apple Health and other popular fitness apps, making the AirPods Pro 3 a more integrated health companion. For users who track workouts and wellness metrics, this marks a significant step in expanding the role of Apple’s audio devices beyond entertainment.

Apple is also expected to refresh the design of the earbuds. While exact details remain under wraps, the focus will be on improving comfort and achieving a better fit for more users. In addition, the charging case will be redesigned into a slimmer profile, resembling the more compact case design seen with the AirPods 4. This adjustment aims to make the AirPods Pro 3 more portable and easier to carry.

Expectations had been higher around sound and noise cancellation. Earlier rumours hinted at a new H3 chip that could deliver “much better” Active Noise Cancellation and audio enhancements. Typically, a new chip signals meaningful upgrades in performance, but Gurman reports that this year’s update will not bring dramatic changes in these areas. While small gains in sound processing and noise reduction are possible, most of the attention appears to be on health integration and design updates.
