Anthropic is lowering the barrier for users looking to switch AI assistants by expanding Claude’s memory feature to its free tier and introducing a new tool designed to import data from competing chatbots.
The update allows users to bring over context and personal information previously stored in other AI tools, helping them avoid starting from scratch when moving to Claude. Until now, Claude’s memory feature — which lets the chatbot retain user preferences and past context — had been limited to paid subscribers.
With the latest update, all Claude users can enable memory by navigating to “Settings” and then “Capabilities.” The same section now includes a new memory import tool.
The import process works by asking users to copy a pre-written prompt into their existing AI chatbot, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini. The output generated by that chatbot can then be pasted into Claude’s import tool, allowing the assistant to absorb relevant background information in one step.
Anthropic says the goal is to make switching between AI platforms more seamless, particularly for users who have invested time building up context, preferences and workflows within another system.
The move comes as Claude’s popularity has been climbing. Tools such as Claude Code and Claude Cowork have helped position the chatbot as a productivity-focused AI assistant. Last month, Anthropic introduced its Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6 models, which the company says deliver stronger performance in coding and complex, multi-step tasks like spreadsheet analysis and form completion.
Anthropic has also drawn attention for its public stance on AI safety and government partnerships. The company recently said it pushed back against Pentagon requests to loosen certain safeguards on its AI systems, stating it has drawn “red lines” around the use of AI for mass surveillance and fully autonomous lethal weapons.
