Vinesh Phogat CAS Verdict Highlight: A decision on Vinesh Phogat's fate at the Paris Olympics was likely to be announced by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Tuesday night. However, the verdict has been deferred for the third time and is now expected to be out on August 16, 6:00pm Paris time. The CAS had previously issued a statement that a decision on Vinesh being eligible for a joint silver in women's 50kg freestyle wrestling will be taken on August 13 at 6 pm Paris time, which is 9:30pm as per the IST. The court had allowed all parties involved to submit their final applications by 6pm Paris time on August 11, the final day of the Paris Games 2024. The Indian wrestler was assured of at least a silver medal but was barred from continuing further due to disqualification. She had failed to meet the eligible weight cut (in this case 50kgs) on the morning of her gold medal bout against USA's Sarah Ann Hildebrandt. Vinesh appealed against her disqualification to the CAS and requested to be awarded a joint silver. The Indian wrestler had met the weight cut on the day of her initial bout, following which she stormed into the finals fair and square. She, however, measured 2.7kgs above the eligibility criteria in the same night, following which she underwent a rigorous schedule. Despite putting in all her efforts, Vinesh failed to shed the extra kilos and was measured overweight by 100gms the next morning, leading to her disqualification. The heartbreak also prompted Vinesh to retire from the sport, which she announced on 'X'.

Vinesh Phogat CAS Verdict Live: Clear discrepancy
Vinesh Phogat CAS Verdict Live: Will Vinesh Phogat get a silver medal? Well United World Wrestling, the international governing body of the sport, thinks its a no but there has been a clear discrepancy in the application of rules by UWW.
The rules state that wrestlers who went down against the finalists get a second chance in the repechage round for the bronze medal. In this case, Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who endured a 0-5 loss against Vinesh in the semifinals, replaced the Indian in the gold medal bout. With that being said, it should have technically been opponents who went down against the Cuban in the repechage round and not Yui Susaki, who eventually went to claim the bronze in the competition.
