Paris Olympics 2024 Day 12 Highlights: The Day 12 of the Paris Olympics started on a shocking note for India as star grappler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified hours before her gold medal match. It was learnt that Vinesh failed to make the weight-cut in the women's 50kg freestyle wrestling on the morning of her 50kg gold medal bout. The IOA released an official statement confirming the same. It was confirmed later that the grappler missed the weight by 100gms. She had cleared the weight cut for her bout lined up on Tuesday, however, later in the night she was 2kgs above the eligibility mark. Vinesh then went through a rigorous routine to shed down the extra kilos but failed to meet the mark by 100gms. She also cut her hair but all efforts by her and coaching staff went in vain. Earlier in the day, Vinesh was hospitalised due to dehydration and was rushed to medical care after fainting. Women’s national coach Virender Dahiya and Manjeet Rani met Vinesh following her heart wrenching disqualification, however, the grappler showed enormous courage and said "it's part of the game." However, she has appealed to the CAS for a joint silver in the competition, the verdict of which will be delivered tomorrow (Thursday). Meanwhile, there was more heartbreak in stored for India as Antim Panghal, another grappler, endured 0-10 loss against Turkey’s Zeynep Yetgil in the women’s freestyle 1/8 53kg final match. Zeynep wrapped the bout in Period 1.

Olympics Day 12 Live Updates: Nenad Lalovic - the head of United World Wrestling (UWW) - on Vinesh Phogat
Olympics Day 12 Live Updates: Nenad Lalovic - the head of United World Wrestling (UWW), the international wrestling governing body, shares his comments on Vinesh Phogat's disqualification. Here is what he had to say:
"I'm so sad that what happened to her (Vinesh Phogat). She had overweight, a very small one but the rules are rules. All the athletes are there and it's impossible to let someone compete who doesn't make the weight."
She won fair and square in the first few games, can't she allowed to compete further?
"Impossible because the the brackets are changing and anyway rules are rules. Everybody who goes know they have a second weigh-in the next day. I don't see anything that can be done."
Will the rules be reviewed in future to avoid such instances?
"No. I believe that we should be more strict on that. Because we have a problem that wrestlers are losing too much weight. And it's not good for their health. Many see their interest at the moment but they don't see what happened to those people in 20-30 years.
"We want athletes to complete in their natural way, that's the idea. And this is when they make the best performance. Unfortunately it's a second case here. We had the Italian girl wrestler (Emanuela Liuzzi) the previous day, who didn't make the way and she didn't compete.
However, that was not in the medal round?
"No difference. The weigh-in it's public, it's recorded and everybody can see. What can I do? I'm really so sad. I understand the winners very disappointment."
