WTC Final Highlights, SA vs AUS Day 3: Aiden Markram's ton, Temba Bavuma's unbeaten 65 get South Africa close to history

June 14, 2025· 01:24 IST

WTC Final Highlights, SA vs AUS Day 3: Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma showed great resilience as South Africa now stand just 69 away with 8 wickets in hands to claim the World Test Championship (WTC) at Lord's. If South Africa get those runs, which appears a strong possibility considering the tempo set by Markram and Bavuma, it will be their first ICC title in over two decades. The pair returned unbeaten at stumps on Day 3 and took South Africa's total to 213/2 after being handed a challenging 282-run target. Markram slammed 102(159), Bavuma struck 65(121) and will lead South Africa's charge when action resumes on Saturday - arguably a landmark day in the history of the sport.

WTC Final Live Score, SA vs AUS Day 3: Aiden Markram leads Proteas fight

June 13, 2025· 23:05 IST

ℹ️MATCH INFO

The tension is palpable! A hush descends as South Africa inches closer to glory. But in the back of their minds, the ghosts of past failures, like that 2024 T20 World Cup final, must be stirring. They faltered slightly on the third morning, letting the Aussie tail wag, but their batting response has been one of sheer grit. Yet, never count out the Aussies; they'll fight tooth and nail until the very last ball. The Proteas need just 69 more runs for a historic victory, but cricket, as we know, is a fickle game - a collapse is always lurking. A sprinkle of rain is forecast for Day 4, but it's unlikely to be a game-changer. Should Australia snatch a couple of quick wickets, this contest could reignite, but even then, it's unlikely to extend beyond a session. Join us for the Saturday showdown, June 14th, 2025, with the first ball scheduled for 3 pm IST (0930 GMT). Our pre-match coverage begins well before, so don't miss a moment! Until then, farewell!

Wiaan Mulder joins Graeme Smith to dissect South Africa's turnaround. Reflecting on their first-innings batting woes, Mulder reveals the squad banished the 'fear of failure'. The coach urged them to aggressively chase down any target set by the Aussies. Mulder distinguishes between the two innings, emphasizing the fearless intent to score this time around. He mentions that batting at No. 3 is new to him. He just looked to be positive and score. He lauds the resilience of Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma, visibly drained but pushing their limits for the team. It was really special to see. He describes the Day 3 pitch as slow, with minimal movement compared to the earlier days. He says that everything happened slowly, and he's delighted his team capitalized.

ℹ️MATCH INFO

Un-Australian conditions, you say? When did we last hear that Lady Luck wasn't smiling on the Baggy Greens? Throughout this Test, particularly on Day 3, fortune has seemingly deserted Australia. They endured the toughest conditions with both bat and ball. Apart from a brief period where catches were spilled and edges evaded fielders, they haven't enjoyed their usual share of luck. In this final innings, two wickets fell to loose shots, briefly raising hopes of a turnaround. But then, a pivotal moment – Bavuma, just 9 balls after Mulder's exit, edged a lifter to slip, where Steve Smith not only dropped the catch but also sustained an injury, ruling him out of the match. Bavuma was only on 2 at that time. After that moment, Australia seemed to lose their way and they were just going through the motions. The body language was an improvement from Day 2, but nothing went their way. Perhaps more aggressive field settings were needed, as Cummins' defensive approach raised eyebrows.

Aiden Markram, a special talent known to all! Australia felt his brilliance firsthand back in 2018 with that stunning century in a losing effort. That knock announced a classy player to the world, and he hasn't disappointed since. Despite some recent ups and downs, a century and a potential WTC final victory would surely erase any doubts. He started this match with a pair, but never looked to be in pressure at any point. Barely gave Australia any chances apart from a couple of drag-ons.

What a session for South Africa! Undoubtedly their finest of the match, amassing 119 runs in 32 overs without losing a wicket. This session was decisive, and the Proteas are now on the cusp of glory. Their positivity shone through, but Temba Bavuma's decision to stay on the field, despite a hamstring niggle, was truly remarkable. It would have been easy to retire hurt, but like a true leader, he battled on, ensuring Markram wasn't hampered by his injury.

That innings announced him to the world, and he hasn't disappointed since. While the last few months have been a bit of a rollercoaster, a century and a potential WTC final victory would certainly overshadow any struggles. Despite starting with a pair, he never appeared rattled, rarely offering the Aussies a genuine chance, barring a couple of inside edges that narrowly missed the stumps.

What a session for South Africa! Their best of the match, racking up 119 runs in 32 overs without losing a wicket. This session was crucial, and the determined Proteas are now within touching distance of lifting the mace. The positivity was always evident, but Temba Bavuma's decision to remain at the crease, despite a hamstring issue, was particularly impressive. It would have been easy to retire hurt, but like a true captain, he battled through the pain, ensuring Markram wasn't affected by his injury and kept the scoreboard ticking.

Wiaan Mulder joins Graeme Smith to dissect South Africa's rollercoaster first innings. Mulder reveals the squad banished any fear of failure, emboldened by the coach's call to aggressively chase down the target set by the Aussies. He emphasizes a stark contrast in mental fortitude between innings, highlighting an intent to score freely in the second dig. Regarding his own promotion to number 3, a first even in First Class cricket, Mulder simply aimed to score off every delivery. He was incredibly impressed by Markram and Bavuma's grit, describing their exhausted yet determined effort for the team as truly special. Reflecting on Day 3's pitch, Mulder noted a significant slowdown and minimal movement compared to the earlier days, suggesting the lack of 'nip' allowed them to capitalize.

FOUR! HUNDRED FOR AIDEN MARKRAM! A majestic innings, full of class and substance! Arguably one of the most important knocks of his Test career, coming in the World Test Championship Final, chasing a formidable 282 against the mighty Australians! The South African contingent in the Lord's stands erupt with joy, a sea of broad smiles, as the crowd rises to applaud this superb batting display. He'd been stuck in the 90s for a while, and this will surely ease the tension. Hazelwood pitches it full, angling it onto middle and leg, and Aiden Markram leans forward, caressing a flick through mid-wicket for a glorious boundary! He removes his helmet, raises his bat to the heavens, and embraces his skipper, Bavuma, who himself has played a brave innings. He soaks in the adulation from the London crowd. Even former South African legend AB de Villiers is capturing the moment on his phone, wearing a beaming smile. Markram has passed the toughest Test of all with flying colors, marking his 8th Test century!

ℹ️MATCH INFO

Hold on... hold on... The Australians are taking their time, deliberately delaying the game, perhaps hoping to unsettle Aiden Markram on the verge of his century. Facing a rare defeat in a final, they seem to be resorting to delay tactics. However, nothing has worked for them thus far, and remarkably, there's been a distinct lack of sledging in this fiercely contested match. In a battle where neither side has given an inch, it's refreshing to see sportsmanship prevailing.

Un-Australian type conditions? When was the last time we heard or read anyone saying, Lady Luck is not favouring Australia? Not only on Day 3, but throughout this Test, the lady is not quite happy with the Kangaroos. They got the roughest of the conditions with both bat and ball and barring a session-and-a-half where catches got put down and the edges went to ground, they have not quite got the luck they have always been rich of. In this final innings, they got two wickets off loose deliveries and it did seem like it will change the tide. But then, came that big moment - 9 balls after Wiaan Mulder's dismissal, Bavuma was reared up by a lifter and gave a catch to slip, only for Steve Smith to not only shell it, but also get ruled out of the match via an injury. Bavuma was on 2 then. After that, Oz did not get any opportunity and just went through the motions. The body language was better than what it was on Day 2 in the morning session, but they just didn't get anything going their way. If any, the field placements could have been a bit more aggressive and it was really surprising to see a captain like Cummins keep a defensive field.

Everyone knows this guy is a special player. Australia got a taste of it in 2018 when he made a stunning century in a losing cause. That gave the world a classy player in Aiden Markram and he has not disappointed since. Yes, the last few months have been a little bit up and down for him as a batter but a century and a win in the WTC final will mask all of that. He started off on a pair but never looked under pressure. Barely gave a chance to the Aussies apart from a couple of drag-ons.

What a session for South Africa. Their best session of the match, as they scored 119 runs in 32 overs without losing even a single wicket. This session could have been defining for either side and it has been a determined Protean side which has come within inches of taking the mace. The positivity was always there but what was impressive was Temba Bavuma's call to stay out there in the middle, despite a hamstring niggle. It would have been easy for him to walk off and let someone else take the load, but like a true captain, he battled hard and at the same time, did not let Markram get bogged down because of his injury.

FOUR! HUNDRED FOR AIDEN MARKRAM! An inning of substance and highest quality from him. Probably one of the most important knocks he has played in his Test career. And this couldn't have come at a better occasion - in the Finale of the World Test Championship, while chasing a mountainous target of 282, and that too, against the toughest opposition like Australia. The South African players in the Lord's gallery get aloft with broad smiles and the crowd is up on its feet, applauding this superb batting from the right hander. He was in his 90s since a while, and this will make him a bit more relaxed. Coming to the delivery, Josh fires this fuller and angles on the middle and leg stump line. Aiden Markram gets on the front foot and flicks this neatly through mid-wicket for a cracking boundary. Removes his helmet, raises his bat to the heavens, hugs his skipper, Bavuma, who has equally played an inning of valor himself. He soaks all the cheer from the crowd in London. Former South African batter, AB de Villiers, also captures this moment in his phone, while of course with a huge smile on his face. In the toughest examination of Test cricket, Markram has passed with flying colors. This marks his 8th Test century.
