The world's oldest alpaca, Hawthornden Wainui, died in New Zealand, leaving behind his love and joy for those who knew him. The beloved animal, who held the Guinness World Record for being the oldest alpaca in captivity, died peacefully on 26 September at the age of 27 years and 267 days.
Who was Wainui, the record-breaking alpaca?
Wainui was born on 2 January 1998 at Hawthornden Alpaca Farm before moving to New Zealand’s Wainui Bay with his mother, where he got his name. He later settled at the farm of his owners, Vicki and Alex Cordier, in 2002. There, he spent his quiet and comfortable life with love and attention.
Alpacas generally live for around 15 to 20 years, making Wainui’s long life extraordinary. His owner, Vicki, credited his peaceful lifestyle for his longevity, saying he enjoyed good food, freedom to roam, and plenty of care.
How did his owners remember him?
In a heartfelt tribute, Vicki and Alex said, “Our dearest Wainui, forever you will have a special place in our hearts. A friend of many in New Zealand and around the world. Rest in peace, our amazing alpaca.”
Earlier this year, Wainui had been officially recognised by Guinness World Records as the oldest living alpaca in captivity. His calm nature made him a favourite among visitors, and he shared his paddock with Barney the goat and Squeak the sheep during his later years.
What made Wainui so special?
Wainui’s fame extended beyond the farm, where he even had his own fan club. His owners proudly kept memorabilia celebrating his record, including his Guinness World Records certificate and a copy of the 2026 edition of the book featuring his story.
Vicki and Alex also thanked Wainui’s veterinarians for ensuring he lived a long and happy life. “He was more than a pet; he was family,” they said.
Wainui’s passing marks the end of an era for his owners and fans alike. But his story, captured in Guinness World Records, continues to inspire love for animals that live long, gentle, and cherished lives.
