The Cold Moon, December’s full moon, will offer a mesmerising celestial display, marking the end of 2024. As the last full moon of the year and autumn, it promises a chilly yet enchanting close to the astronomical calendar.

The moon will officially reach its full phase at 4:01 a.m. EST on Sunday, Dec. 15. Viewers can catch its best moments later that day during moonrise in the eastern sky. This luminous spectacle will appear in Taurus, surrounded by bright stars and the planet Jupiter.

For those equipped with binoculars or small telescopes, the view promises a treat. The moon’s orange-tinged surface will glow beautifully against the horizon. Known as the Cold Moon, its name reflects its timing, rising just before the winter solstice. This solstice marks the year's longest night in the Northern Hemisphere.
