Cassowaries look like creatures from prehistoric times. “There’s something primeval about them. They look like living dinosaurs,” said Andrew Mack, who studied cassowaries in Papua New Guinea for five years.
The bird can grow as tall as a human and weigh up to 310 kilograms. Despite its size, it moves with surprising speed and agility. Thanks to powerful legs, cassowaries can sprint up to 31 miles per hour and leap seven feet into the air. They are also strong swimmers, navigating rivers and streams with ease.
What makes cassowaries truly dangerous are their sharp claws. If threatened, they use these claws to slash and stab, posing serious risks to humans and animals alike.
When Beauty Meets Danger
Cassowaries are generally shy and hard to spot. They prefer to avoid humans and rarely attack unless provoked. But when angered, they can be deadly.
“If you encounter a cassowary in the wild, stay calm,” advised Peter Rowles, founder of the Community for Coastal & Cassowary Conservation. “Put your hands behind your back and avoid sudden movements. Blend into your surroundings and don’t attract its attention.”
While cassowaries can be dangerous, humans pose a greater threat to them. Habitat loss, vehicle strikes, and dog attacks have reduced their numbers. Many cassowaries die due to human activities, making conservation efforts crucial.

For some Aboriginal cultures, cassowaries hold deep cultural importance. They appear in traditional dances, rituals, and stories passed down through generations. These communities also play a role in protecting the bird’s future.
