Gujarat Floods: Surat Streets Inundated After Heavy Rains; Schools Shut, IMD issues Orange Alert

Gujarat experienced severe monsoon rainfall, leading to the closure of schools in several districts, including Surat, due to waterlogging and safety concerns. Over the past 24 hours, 159 talukas reported light to heavy rainfall, with Jodiya in Jamnagar recording the highest at 7.17 inches. Urban centers, particularly Surat, were heavily affected, with submerged low-lying areas and halted traffic. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several districts on June 24 and 25, warning of continued heavy to very heavy rainfall across Saurashtra and South Gujarat. Yellow alerts remain in place for other regions. In response, the state administration has activated disaster response protocols, deploying NDRF and SDRF teams, setting up control rooms, and instructing local authorities to manage evacuation, dewatering, and dam monitoring. Departments handling health, power, and water are on high operational readiness to ensure essential services continue and risks are mitigated in flood-prone zones.
