Heavy rains in Mumbai, BMC says step out only if necessary

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has sent an alert to the Mumbaikars to move out of their houses only if necessary as heavy rains continue to lash Mumbai from the last 24 hours.

Normal life in Mumbai has been crippled as heavy rains continue to batter the city for the second day on Wednesday. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now sent an alert to Mumbaikars to move out of their houses only if necessary.

Colaba has recorded 158.6 mm of rain in the last 20 hours. Santacruz has recorded 168.6 mm rainfall since Tuesday. The temperature in Mumbai has dipped to minimum of 22 degree Celsius due to continuous rainfall. The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 24 to 48 hours. It has also predicted heavy rainfall along the Konkan coast in the next 60 hours. A high tide is also expected on Wednesday at 1.27 pm. The fishermen have been asked not to venture in the sea. According to reports some schools have remain shut due to the heavy rains. The BMC has issued an advisory to parents asking them to pick up their children from schools. Trains are running half an hour to forty five minutes late in Mumbai on Wednesday. A one km-long stretch of the Mumbai bypass also caved on Wednesday morning. Slow traffic has been reported at Western and Eastern expressway. Heavy rains in Mumbai have led to waterlogging at Hindmata, Grant Road, Napean Sea Road and Lokhandwala Complex. Around 222 spots have been identified as prone to waterlogging in Mumbai. Forty areas have been identified as chronic. 220 water pumps have been placed across the 185 flooding spots in Mumbai.
