The Constitution of India came into effect on January 26, 1950, nearly three years after we gained independence from British rule. Since then, January 26 has been celebrated as the Republic Day of India. Republic Day is a day of great pride for every Indian, signifying India’s transition to a sovereign democratic republic, free of the yoke of foreign rule.
Every year, to mark this momentous occasion, a grand Republic Day parade is organised in the national capital of Delhi. The parade features regiments of the Army, Navy, Air Force, police and paramilitary forces. On Republic Day, the President unfurls the national flag at India Gate while the parade showcases India’s military prowess and rich cultural heritage with the help of grand tableaux.
