Isha Ambani for Met Gala 2024 in a Rahul Mishra creation

Isha Ambani made a case for sustainability and ‘swadeshi’ with her fashion choices at this year’s Met Gala. For the world’s biggest night in fashion, Isha Ambani wore a custom Rahul Mishra creation that took 10,000 hours to complete. Her floral sari-inspired gown was intricately hand-embroidered at villages across India before it reached the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City – the venue for the annual Met Gala.

The theme for this year’s Met Gala is “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” In keeping with the dress code “The Garden of Time,” Isha Ambani’s outfit featured delicate samples of flowers, butterflies, and dragonflies that were meticulously integrated from Rahul Mishra’s archives into its design.

Anaita Shroff Adajania, who styled Ambani for the fundraising event, said that traditional embroidery techniques such as Fareesha, Zardozi, Nakshi, and Dabka, as well as French knots were used to embroider the samples into the train of Ambani’s gown.

“This look embraces sustainability by incorporating elements from Rahul’s past collections,” she explained.

“The magnificent look was intricately hand-embroidered at Rahul Mishra’s ateliers across several Indian villages, supporting hundreds of local craftspeople and weavers,” Adajania added.
Isha Ambani complemented the look with a clutch crafted by Swadesh using the ancient Indian art forms of Nakashi and Miniature Painting. The bag features an intricate miniature painting of India’s national bird, the mayor or peacock, created by Jaipur artisan Hari Narain Marotia. Jewellery by Viren Bhagat completed her look.
