Myra Carvalho, a 35-year-old Brazilian national, has been sentenced to 14 weeks' imprisonment after pleading guilty to stalking singer-actor Harry Styles. The verdict, delivered at the Harrow Crown Court, marks the culmination of a distressing saga during which Carvalho inundated Styles with an astonishing 8,000 cards in less than a month, according to court proceedings.
The relentless campaign of harassment unfolded as Carvalho sent handwritten letters and ordered a barrage of cards online, all directed at the 30-year-old musician, who shot to fame as a member of the internationally acclaimed boy band One Direction.
Among the deluge of correspondence were wedding cards, adding a disturbing layer to the unsettling ordeal. Court documents revealed that Carvalho went as far as hand-delivering two letters to Styles' address.
Prosecutors described Carvalho's actions as "stalking involving serious alarm or distress." In addition to her custodial sentence, Carvalho has been slapped with a restraining order lasting a decade, effectively prohibiting her from attending any event where Styles is performing.
The court heard that Carvalho had been staying at a backpacking hostel in Earl's Court, west London, since her arrival in the UK in December, all without the knowledge of her family.
Speaking on the matter, a court official outlined the stipulations of Carvalho's sentencing, emphasizing that she is prohibited from any form of contact with Harry Styles, directly or indirectly. She has also been barred from entering a specific area of north-west London, delineated by the court.
In addition to her custodial sentence and restraining order, Carvalho has been ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £134.
