Government’s Bharat Net project under the Digital India initiative is struggling, with its March 2017 target seeing a significant cut. According to sources, the government has now set a new target of connecting 30,000 gram panchayats by March 2017 as against its target of 1 lakh gram panchayats in phase I.

Progress of phase I of the project is extremely slow with only 16,500 gram panchayats integrated and tested till date. Due to the slow progress, the government has revised the target and kept it to 30,000, the completion of which also seems difficult in less than a month.
