The BJP is still not convinced about the government's retail FDI initiative. Party president Nitin Gadkari told CNBC-TV18 that though the BJP would support the government's decisions to revive the economy, it did not favour the policy of using FDI as the only solution to turn the economy around.
"Regarding the allowing of FDI in retail, we have some reservations as the government has not created the requisite infrastructure. Is it not the duty of this government to establish some basic infrastructure in the agriculture and rural sectors? Are we to expect help and direction from foreign companies? What is the situation of this country? Does the government have the potential to turn the economy around? FDI alone cannot be a solution to the current economic situation."
Gadkari also said that the BJP was not vindictive towards individuals and would support P Chidambaram if he returned as the finance minister.
“The BJP is not vindictive about any leader. We have always opposed policies and now there are some decisions from the court regarding Chidambaramji. We are not vindictive about him. Now it is the privilege of the Prime Minister to decide who is to be the finance minister."
