Hello and welcome to this extra special episode of The Firm. Our coverage of the Supreme Court's decision in the Vodafone tax case has been dominated by commentary from tax lawyers, consultants and corporate India. But today it's the turn of revenue and I have with me on the show none other than the man who could have been David toppling the goliath like offshore structures that M&A is centered around. Girish Dave, retired as chief commissioner of Income-Tax from Mumbai in early 2010 after serving in the Income Tax department for more than three decades.


Between the years 2005 and 2009, he was director of international taxation, Mumbai and that's when he wrote the showcause notice asking why Vodafone should not be considered assessee in default for not withholding tax when paying hutch for a 67% economic interest in Hutch Essar. So quite literally, he is the man who started the fire!
