India's goal in artificial intelligence (AI) is not to compete with the likes of Silicon Valley bigshots Sam Altman or Elon Musk in developing the technology, but to build real-life use cases in sectors like agriculture, education, and healthcare to transform the lives of citizens, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on December 6.
"Our goal is not to compete with Sam Altman or Elon Musk or win the next Noble Prize, but transform lives of people with use cases. AI will be used to build capabilities in real-life use cases," he said.
"1.2 billion Indians, as diverse as they are, require very different types of healthcare. AI will play a very important role in agriculture, healthcare, security, language translation, and inclusion," he added.
Speaking at the Global Technology Summit organised by Carnegie, he said that the government is working on a comprehensive strategy to get compute capacity for AI through the public and private sector, and an announcement on the same could be expected by January.
Chandrasekhar also spoke about the importance of balancing innovation and regulation, while calling for international collaboration among governments to come up with a common framework to set the guardrails for AI.
The minister also said that a legacy node semiconductor fab announcement is expected to be made soon as a part of India's $10 billion chip subsidy scheme.
