Karnataka has decided to strengthen its security systems by integrating AI technology to ensure comprehensive protection across medical campuses.
This move comes after a nationwide protest against the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.
Officials said AI-powered cameras will monitor the movement of people, detect intrusions, etc in medical colleges, hospitals, and hostels. "AI-based face recognition cameras will help identify suspicious individuals and activities," said an official.

Karnataka Minister for Medical Education & Skill Development Sharan Prakash Patil chaired a high-level meeting on August 13 at Vikasa Soudha to discuss measures to enhance security measures. Among the proposed personal safety measures are colour-coded ID badges, personal security alarms, SOS remotes, and hooters. Other initiatives include safe transportation options, counselling services, and training in self-defence and crisis response.

Officials also presented plans to establish a central control room, staffed by ex-army personnel, where CCTV surveillance and personal security alarm systems will be monitored 24/7. The control room will also operate a round-the-clock helpline. “Further, efforts are underway to install additional CCTV cameras, improve street lighting, and create separate duty rooms and restrooms for male and female staff,” a statement from Patil’s official said.
Patil said that all medical institutions should establish security audit committees. "These committees should hold monthly meetings to review safety protocols. Additionally, thorough background checks must be conducted for all security personnel. To further ensure safety, 24/7 canteen facilities should be available so that women healthcare staff do not need to leave the premises," said Patil. He also said that a panel would be formed at the state secretariat to oversee the implementation of these measures, with institution heads being held accountable for any security lapses.
