The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has called for a statewide bandh in Bihar on Thursday to protest against the alleged abusive language used against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother during a rally by the Opposition in Darbhanga.
BJP's Bihar state president, Dilip Jaiswal, said the five-hour bandh will be observed from 7 am to 12 noon.
Why has Bihar bandh been called?
The statewide bandh is in protest against objectionable comments allegedly made by Congress workers against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his mother last week in Darbhanga during the Voter Adhikar Yatra, being led by Tejashwi Yadav and Rahul Gandhi.
The remarks have drawn widespread condemnation from NDA leaders.
Janata Dal (United) leader Umesh Kushwaha criticized the opposition’s conduct, stating, “During the opposition’s rally in Darbhanga, abusive words were used against Prime Minister Modi and his mother. This is wrong, both morally and politically."
Congress and BJP workers also clashed in Patna when the saffron party workers took a rally to Congress's office.
Referring to alleged derogatory remarks made during the Voter Adhikar Yatra in Bihar last week, PM Modi on Tuesday said, "The struggles (Tapasya) of a poor mother, the suffering of her son--these young princes born into royal families cannot be understood. These 'naamdaar' people were born with a silver spoon in their mouths. The power of the country and Bihar seems like an inheritance of their family to them."
JD(U) state president Umesh Singh Kushwaha urged public to support the state-wide bandh. "To make this bandh special, BJP Mahila Morcha and all the women units of NDA will take charge," Kushwaha was quoted by TOI as saying.
Bihar Bandh: What's open, what's closed?
During the five-hour bandh, essential services, including emergency medical care and railway operations, will continue to function normally.
However, schools, offices, and transport department will face disruptions due to the protest.
The protest is being spearheaded by BJP Mahila Morcha, the party’s women’s wing, which will organize demonstrations across the state as part of the agitation.
According to a report in Oneindia, a Chakka Jam protest will also be led by women’s groups. The report mentioned that the protest will remain peaceful but widespread, with road blockades in major towns and highways.
