Assam Election Result 2021 Highlights : Counting of votes is underway for the Assam assembly elections. BJP is leading comfortably over Congress-led alliance. BJP-led NDA is leading in 77 of the 119 seats, show trends available on the Election Commission website. Key candidates from the ruling alliance, including CM Sarbananda Sonowal, Himanta Biswa Sarma, are leading in their respective seats. The ruling BJP hopes to return to power with its allies in the northeastern state. The ruling BJP is facing a challenge from 'Mahajoth' or 'Grand Alliance' comprising the Congress, AIUDF, Bodoland Peoples' Front (BPF), CPI(M), CPI, CPI(ML) Liberation, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM). The BJP has an alliance with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) and the Gana Suraksha Party (GSP). In 2016, the saffron party had scripted history by winning the traditionally Congress-dominated state after remaining on the fringes. Polling was held in three phases in Assam on March 27, April 1 and 6. Election Commission has said that Assam will have a maximum of counting halls. The EC has banned victory roadshows and vehicle rallies amid surging COVID-19 cases.

After three phases of polling in the state, the Assam State Assembly Elections have come to an end. As predicted by the exit polls, the BJP hasmanaged to beat the incumbency factor as well as massive anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) sentiments with the ruling NDA ahead of the Congress-led Grand Alliance with leads and results in 80 of 126 seats in Assam.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal won from Majuli constituency, Finance and Health Minister and BJP’s star campaigner Himanta Biswa Sarma won from Jalukbari for the fifth straight term. Incarcerated anti-CAA activist Akhil Gogoi won from Sibsagar, according to Assam assembly election results.
As of 10:40 pm, The BJP won 39seats and was leading in 18 while its ally AGP was poised won 8 seatsand the UPPL won five.
Sonowal said the people had blessed them. “A victory for Barak-Brahmaputra, Hills & Plains. Thank you Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi,” he said. “We can say for sure that the BJP will form government in Assam. We are coming back to power with our partners AGP and UPPL,” Sonowal told reporters. Sarma said the BJP will soon form the government in the state and the party will decide who will be made the next chief minister.

The Congress leaders of the state felt marginalized.

In Assam, the people have shown their approval of the Sarbananda Sonowal-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. In Kerala, the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government has reversed a nearly four-decade-old trend of alternating governments every five years. In Tamil Nadu, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) government has been shown the door, while in West Bengal the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is all set to retain power.
Assam:If in 2016 the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) victory was attributed to anti-incumbency against the Tarun Gogoi government, this time the BJP has shown that it has firmly etched its position in the state. What makes BJP’s victory important is that the party has won despite facing massive protests against the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) and the NRC (National Register of Citizen), of which Assam was the epicentre. The victory in Assam will be a fillip to the national party’s efforts to reinforce its presence in the rest of the Northeast. This victory will also cushion the defeat in West Bengal.
