Weigh-in-motion | For the first time, entry points at an expressway have "weigh-in-motion" sensors to keep a check on overloading in trucks. In case the trucks are overloaded, entry gate will not open. The truck would be directed to an exit point where parking lot has been constructed to stop them. These parking lots can have maximum of 100 trucks at once.

Eco-friendly | Dubbed as “green-field”, it has street lights powered by eight solar panels having a capacity of 4 megawatts. 2.5 lakh trees have been planted along the EPE. The drip-irrigation technique is used to water these plants and it also has rainwater harvesting system.

Respite for Delhi | EPE is expected to reduce pollution levels in the national capital by 50 percent as vehicles, not bound to Delhi, shall be able to bypass the city. As per an estimate, 50,000 trucks would use the EPE, reducing load on Delhi’s already choked roads and air.

Safety first | CCTVs have been installed at every 2 km along with patrolling vans at every 25 km to avoid criminal activities. Ambulance vans shall also be available at every 25 km. Apart from that, the EPE is equipped with a slew of warning and vehicle tracking system to have real time incident management.

Pay as you travel system | The toll on the EPE will be collected only on the distance travelled and not on the entire length. Toll plazas will be equipped with Electronic Toll Collection system for faster toll collection and uninterrupted travel experience. However, the toll amount charged at EPE will be 25 percent higher than regular toll. This would amount to roughly Rs 1.4/km extra. Officials, however, say that the system of "pay as you travel" shall balance the higher price. NHAI and state government will tie up to collect fine or 'challan' for over speeding on the expressway.

Glimpses of India | Miniatures of about 36 monuments have been set up along the expressway, including Ashoka lion, Konark Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, Ashoka Chakra, Gateway of India, Qutab Minar, Char Minar, Lal Quila, Kirti Stambh, India Gate and Hawa Mahal to give riders a pan-India experience. The NHAI has also set up a digital gallery at the toll plaza to showcase engineering marvels build by it. The construction of the EPE has been completed and will be thrown open to the public after May 27. The pictures in the slideshow were taken in April.
