December local car sales up 29%

Car sales in India rose an annual 28.9% in December, an industry body said on Tuesday, largely driven by a burgeoning middle class in a rapidly growing economy, easier access to loans and a wider choice of models.

Car sales in India rose an annual 28.9% in December, an industry body said on Tuesday, largely driven by a burgeoning middle class in a rapidly growing economy, easier access to loans and a wider choice of models.


Indian automakers sold 148,681 cars in the last month of the year, according to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

Sales of trucks and buses, a key pointer to economic activity, rose 27.3% to 61,880 units in December, SIAM said.
