In the show Two Much With Kajol and Twinkle, host Kajol happened to say that 'open relationships are the future'. To this, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt elicited different responses. While Varun seemed to agree to the fact that they're a reality of this day and age, Alia, on the other hand, repeated Kajol's remark with a sense of disdain and disbelief in equal measure. It was Twinkle Khanna who seemed to give an interesting viewpoint on the subject. She said, "Intellectually, I agree. Emotionally, I don't want to."

So, what are open relationships really? Relationship expert Ruchi Ruuh explains, "An open relationship is one where both partners mutually and consciously agree to seek romantic or sexual relationships outside their primary partnership." She also goes on to explain that open relationships are heavily reliant on consent, communication and transparency between the partners about the other relationships they form. "Couples redefine their definition of intimacy and commitment towards each other away from the prescribed definitions of a traditional relationship," she added.

While open relationships are on rise, Ruuh has a word of caution for people opting to have such an arrangement. "I have seen cases where one partner has gotten more emotionally involved outside the relationship. This is when trouble begins. A lot of people don't foresee it that such relationships can give rise to jealousy. Partners can feel threatened or replaced when their other half starts seeking intimacy from elsewhere," she explained.
