Setting a table used to mean a tidy arrangement of cutlery, a napkin folded neatly, and maybe a single flower in a vase. But these days, it’s about more than just function, it’s about flair. Enter the age of the tablescape, where every plate, glass and accessory contributes to a visual story, much like painting a canvas.
Every piece on your dining table has the potential to speak volumes. The right approach can transform a meal into an unforgettable event. Anjaleka Kripalani, interior architect and founder, Angie Homes, tells Moneycontrol, “Setting a table doesn’t have to be a boring chore. Try telling a visual story through your table where every item from the table linen to the smallest accessory ties into the mood you are trying to create.”
Tablescape, she says, is more than a dining space; it’s creating an experience. "The table should reflect your personality and the occasion. Whether it’s a casual weekend brunch, a festive family dinner, or an elegant soirée, the right combination of tableware, glassware, and décor elevates the moment.”

The trick, Kripalani insists, lies in layering and mixing textures. "Layering is key. Start off with an elegant table runner or placemats as your base layer, then build depth with sculptural candle stands or metallic napkin rings, and handcrafted vases to accommodate for layers and textures. Mixing materials, marble, crystal, metal, ceramic, provides richness to the visual story you are telling", she says.
Adding statement centrepieces, whether it’s a lush floral arrangement in a crystal vase or the soft glow of a designer candle, can instantly give warmth and personality to the table. “Ultimately, the table should tell your story, whether it is timeless elegance, playful charm, or bold modernity,” she adds.
Kriplani shares tips on how to make your table look effortlessly luxe
- Start with a base layer: The foundation of any tablescape is your runner or placemats. Opt for something with subtle texture or muted colour to anchor the design without overpowering it. Linen or handwoven mats give a natural, cosy feel, while metallic or silk runners add instant glamour.
- Add texture and depth: Sculptural elements like candle holders, napkin rings, or small vases give your table dimension. Play with height and spacing; a single tall candle can balance a cluster of low bowls or succulents. Layering in this way keeps the eye moving and makes the arrangement look effortless rather than cluttered.
- Mix materials for richness: Don’t be afraid to combine marble, crystal, ceramic, wood, and metal. A marble charger with a ceramic plate and a crystal glass can feel luxurious, while metal cutlery adds a modern edge. The key is to strike harmony, too much contrast can feel chaotic, but a little unexpected pairing keeps it interesting.
- Statement centrepieces matter: Choose one or two pieces that draw attention. A lush floral arrangement in a crystal vase instantly signals occasion, while a group of scented candles can create a soft, inviting glow. Kripalani notes: “Enhancing with a couple of statement centrepieces from our décor line, whether that’s beautiful floral arrangements in our crystal vases or soft glowing from one of our designer candles, adds warmth and personality.”Also Read: Dine in style: All the know how on dining furniture that you didn’t know you needed
- Curate with intention: Every object on your table should serve a purpose, whether practical or decorative. Small details like artisanal salt bowls, hand-painted coasters, or even quirky napkin folds reflect thoughtfulness. “Each and every one of our products was created with intention in hopes that you can help weave that story,” says Kripalani.
- Think seasonally and thematically: Swap centrepieces, linens, or candles according to season or theme. Fresh herbs in spring, warm-toned foliage in autumn, or festive metallics for holidays make the table feel alive and dynamic.
- Personal touches make it memorable: Try handwritten place cards, miniature treats, or favoured trinkets. These small gestures amp up the meal into an experience your guests won’t forget.
