Hair loss is a common concern that affects millions globally. With advancements in technology, hair transplants have come to the rescue of those looking for a long-term cure. Despite the success rate they enjoy, many still believe them to be a cosmetic shortcut.
Dr Vandana Verma, Medical Director at Kibo Hair Sciences, told Moneycontrol that a hair transplant is, in fact, a carefully planned surgical procedure that works best when approached with the right understanding. Here are 5 common myths she busted.
It is a one-stop solution
One of the most common myths is that hair transplant is a one-stop solution for hair loss. In reality, it creates the appearance of fuller hair by redistributing existing follicles. “Hair transplant is a minor surgical procedure which involves taking out grafts from the back of the head and then placing it in the front where it is required. It is more about redistribution than cure or treatment for hair loss,” explains Dr. Verma, adding, “To protect your existing hair and sustain results, ongoing integrative medical therapy remains essential.”
Donor hair is unlimited
Another widespread misconception is the idea of unlimited donor. “Your donor hair is precious, yet a limited resource. A healthy donor area has a limit of around 6000-7000 grafts available in the average person’s safe donor zone”. Strategic planning is crucial to ensure optimal coverage, especially as hair loss can progress over time.

It is too painful
Pain is another fear that keeps many people hesitant. Modern hair transplant procedures are performed under local anaesthesia, which typically becomes effective within minutes and lasts several hours rendering the procedure seamlessly comfortable with minor or minimal discomfort during or after the procedure.
It guarantees instant transformation
Instant results are also heavily misunderstood. While the transplanted area may look fuller initially, shedding of transplanted hair within the first month is completely normal. New hair growth begins around three to four months post-surgery, with visible improvement over time. Final results usually appear between 12 to 18 months. “Hair restoration is a process of placing hair in the recipient area where they enter a normal hair cycle and then go through different phases, not an overnight transformation,” notes Dr Vandana. “It is easy to be misled when advertisements claim miracles like transformation. There is really no shortcut.”
It is just for men
Finally, the notion that hair transplant is only for men is rapidly fading. More women are opting for the procedure, particularly to address thinning and pattern hair loss. Recent data suggests a 16.5% rise in hair transplant surgeries among women over the past five years, reflecting growing awareness and acceptance.

The truth is, a successful hair transplant depends less on hype and more on science, planning, and realistic expectations. When done right, it can be life-changing but only when myths are left behind and informed decisions take their place.
