National Plastic Surgery Day 2024: Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes excess fat deposits from specific areas of the body to improve contours and proportions. Commonly targeted areas include the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, arms, neck, and chin. The procedure involves inserting a thin tube (cannula) through small incisions to suction out fat. While liposuction can enhance body shape, it is not a substitute for weight loss or a treatment for obesity.

Liposuction has been surrounded by myths and misconceptions. While many people see it as a miracle solution for weight loss, the reality is more nuanced, says Dr Anmol Chugh consultant, plastic surgeon at CK Birla hospital, Gurugram. Dr Chugh lists down some of the common myths and facts about liposuction.

Myth: Liposuction is a weight loss solution

Fact: Liposuction is not intended for significant weight loss. It is a body contouring procedure designed to remove stubborn fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise. Ideal candidates are those who are near their target weight but want to address specific areas of fat.
