We all have a soft spot for junk food. Whether it's biting into a juicy burger, sipping on a creamy hot chocolate at a café, or sharing a pizza with friends, junk food often serves as the backdrop for some of our fondest memories. But while these indulgences may satisfy our cravings, they also come with significant health risks. For those on a weight loss journey, consuming too much junk food can seriously hinder progress.
However, it’s not necessary to completely eliminate junk food from our lives. Fitness coach Raj Ganpath, in an Instagram video shared on April 4, offered practical tips on how to enjoy junk food in moderation while still making it work for your fitness goals. “We’re going to eat junk anyway, so let’s make it count and be smart about it,” he said.

Make it count
Raj emphasised that the key to enjoying junk food without regret is ensuring that it’s truly satisfying. “The reason we eat junk food is for the experience and the enjoyment of the taste. So, make sure that any junk food you indulge in is something that truly excites you,” he advised. He encouraged people not to eat junk food just because it's available or out of habit, but because it's something they genuinely enjoy.
Don’t eat junk food when you’re hungry
Raj also highlighted the importance of timing when it comes to junk food consumption. “Extreme hunger and junk food don’t mix well,” he explained. When we’re starving, we’re more likely to overeat, and junk food is often consumed in unhealthy portions. Instead of reaching for a quick fix when you’re famished, Raj suggested opting for something healthier first, like fruits, vegetables, or protein. This will help bring your hunger under control and create a more balanced mindset before you consider indulging in junk food.
Make it hard to access
Another useful strategy Raj shared is making junk food less accessible. “If you buy junk food in large quantities and keep it at home, it’s only a matter of time before you feel the urge to dive in—whether from stress, boredom, or the belief that you deserve a treat,” he explained. To combat this, he recommends ordering smaller portions, finishing them off, and tossing the leftovers if necessary. While it might seem inconvenient to have to order more if you want another serving, that inconvenience helps prevent mindless overeating.
