Indian actor Anupam Tripathi has starred in multiple Korean series and dramas in supporting roles. He has now finally bagged his first lead in the Korean mystery film, Rhapsody for the Dead.
In a recent interview with Hankook Ilbo, Anupam, who played the role of Ali in the hit Korean series Squid Game, reflected on his turning point in his acting journey. He also talked about his personal struggles and professional aspirations.
The actor admitted that he was left surprised by the lead role offer. Anupam recalled asking the director, “I asked why they chose me.”
However, he further shared that the director claimed they saw a new side of him after watching King the Land that went beyond what people knew from Squid Game.
He elaborated, “It’s the first time a Korean movie is being released with me as the lead actor. For an Indian actor, this isn’t something that happens often, so I’m both excited and nervous.”
Anupam claimed that he had been told that he couldn't play villains because of his tender appearance and expressive eyes. However, he aimed to refute that notion with Rhapsody for the Dead.
He noted, “Anuat allowed me to show a new side of myself. I wanted viewers to feel a strange sense of depth, as if my gaze was reaching beyond what they could see on the screen.”
Anupam Tripathi will portray the role of Anuat, a man haunted by a horrific past and hidden secrets, who crosses paths with Soo-ah, played by Im Do-hwa, a young woman cursed to die when she turns 25 in the series. The two characters are forced to face a terrifying fate as the story takes place over the course of one night.
Rhapsody for the Dead was released in Korea on August 27.
Anupam Tripathi has also starred in popular Korean titles like Strangers From Hell, Descendants of the Sun, and The 8th Night, among others.
