Legendary pop star Britney Spears has been fighting for her life rights against her own father, Jamie Spears, since 2007. In 2007, her father put her under a conservatorship.
A conservatorship is a law in the USA wherein a person that is incapable of looking after themselves are appointed a guardian. The guardian looks after everything for that person. Especially financial matters.
Now, anyone with a reasonable mind would ask, why is a pop singer that is regularly releasing hit albums and performing in sold out world tours in a conservatorship?
That is where the corruption and deviousness of the paparazzi culture of the 2000s comes in. They used to hound Spears to get any kind of vulnerable moment captured so that they could make a mockery of her in the next day’s newspaper. The level of empathy for Spears during 2007-2009 was at an all time low. Everyone wanted her to be America’s innocent golden child forever but obviously Spears didn’t want to become a relic of time.
Jamie Spears along with Lou M. Taylor, the owner of a celebrity security firm called ‘Tri-Star’, conspired an operation against his own daughter in 2007.
In 2007, Spears was going through a divorce and custody battle with ex-husband, Kevin Federline, with whom she had two sons, Jayden James and Sean Preston. In February, Spears drove down to Federline’s house to see her kids. A car with two paparazzi was following her. Federline denied Spears’ visit which made her, understandably, angry.
She drove down to a hair salon and in an infamous incident, shaved her head.
The paparazzi should have backed off by seeing Spears so visibly upset but they didn’t. They kept harassing her.
Spears took an umbrella and smashed it in the car of the paparazzi.
This became an international scandal.
Everyone in the world, other than Spears, had their own two cents to give on the situation. Jaime Spears took advantage of the hate that Spears was facing and called her mentally unstable.
The court then decided to take her children away from her which triggered another incident.
A SWAT team was sent to Britney’s house to take her kids away so she locked herself in the washroom with her two sons. Why was a SWAT team that is used for criminals sent to a lady’s house? They portrayed the washroom incident as Spears abusing her children. She was then tied down in an ambulance bed and taken to a mental health care facility against her will.
While she was held hostage at the facility, Jaime Spears sneakily got the court to approve the conservatorship claim.
Spears was under an illegal conservatorship from 2008 to 2021, that is around 14 years.
The singer was given drugs that she didn’t need, she was kept under surveillance, she wasn’t allowed to drive or to meet people, even her boyfriends were vetted by her dad. She wasn’t even allowed to choose her own lawyer which is unconstitutional. Spears basically had no personal autonomy.
In 2020, her fans started noticing an unusual silence from Spears. It turned out that she was admitted to a rehabilitation centre against her will again. This news kickstarted a fan-lead movement called the ‘Free Britney’ movement.
Fans started questioning the legitimacy and the abuse behind the conservatorship. The spotlight on the topic helped Spears get a lawyer of her own, Matthew Rosengart. He helped her end the conservatorship in a ground breaking trial in November 2021.
But that wasn’t the end of it, the trial had still been going on up until recently but we just learned that Rosengart has agreed to a settlement between Britney Spears and Jaime Spears. This news was really unexpected and it hit the fans hard. Everyone wanted justice for Britney Spears but I guess it’s not a possibility anymore.
The perpetrators of this crime will get away scot-free. The worst part about this is that Britney still has to pay Jaime Spears’ legal fees.
