Henry Golding, who recently appeared in Another Simple Favor alongside Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick, gave an update about the much loved rom-com Crazy Rich Asians.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting developments for quite some time now. Back in 2018, the film Crazy Rich Asians, adapted from Kevin Kwan's best-selling novel of the same name, made its theatrical debut and went on to become a global box office sensation.
During an interview with E! News recently, Henry stated, "Adele Lim is healming. She's our showrunner. She was one of the writers in the first one with Peter Chiarelli. But she came over to London maybe four weeks ago to see me and Gemma [Chan] to talk about our characters. So things are happening."
The romantic comedy followed the journey of Rachel Chu (played by Constance Wu), a New Yorker who accompanies her boyfriend Nick Young (portrayed by Henry Golding) to Singapore for his best friend's wedding and to finally meet his family. However, Nick conveniently omits a few key details—like the fact that his family is unimaginably wealthy and that he’s considered one of Singapore’s most eligible bachelors. His mother doesn't make it any easier for Rachel when they visit his family.
After reading the first three books in the Crazy Rich Asians series, fans have been eagerly awaiting the next film adaptation for the past seven years. Director Jon M. Chu has clarified, though, that there is a good reason for the protracted quiet and sluggish development of the sequel.
Few months ago during an episode of Deadline's Crew Call podcast, Jon spoke about the possibility of a sequel and said, "I won’t bring everyone back unless it’s worth it. I want the best thing. I want it to be worthy of what Crazy Rich Asians 1 was. We’ve tried all different versions. It’s hard because people think the first movie is like the book, but it actually is not. It’s the right spirit, but the plotting is very different. And so, you can’t just go and translate. And we’ve tried versions and the fact is, is that we just haven’t gotten there. And there’s no way I’m dragging the audience back. There’s no way. The bar is too high. So, in time when we get there, we will."
In addition to Henry and Gemma in the lead roles, the rom-com also stars Awkwafina, Lisa Lu, Harry Shum Jr. and Ken Jeong in pivotal roles.
