The SUV segment is thriving in India with a bulk of contribution coming from sub-4 metre and mid-size models of Japanese, Korean and Indian carmakers. However, when it comes to bigger, three-row SUVs, nothing comes close to the Mahindra Scorpio, at least in terms of volumes.
The Scorpio, including the N and the Classic, garnered its highest-ever annual volumes at 1,64,842 units in FY25. This year, it has already reached 56,422 units (April-July) and is slated to drive ahead of last year.
Considering its size and price range, the Mahindra Scorpio's rivals range from the Tata Harrier and the MG Hector to the Hyundai Alcazar and the Jeep Compass. Despite others being quite capable SUVs, the demand for the Mahindra Scorpio has been robust.
The industry experts attribute the Scorpio's success to factors like rugged build and durability, commanding road presence, spacious cabin, multiple powertrain options and continuous updates. Compared to other big SUVs, the Scorpio also offers a competitive price for its size, capability and features.
While the Scorpio Classic is priced between Rs 13,76,599 and Rs 17,71,998 (ex-showroom), the Scorpio N sits in the price bracket of Rs 13,99,200 to Rs 25,42,000 (ex-showroom).
You get petrol as well as diesel powertrains in the Scorpio N. Its 2.0-litre mStallion TGDi petrol engine (203PS and 370/380Nm) can be paired either with a 6-speed MT or a 6-speed AT. The same transmission options are also available with the SUV's 2.2-litre mHawk CRDi diesel engine (175PS and 400Nm). The diesel mill also has a relatively less powerful avatar (132PS and 300Nm) for the lower variants with a 6-speed MT. The Scorpio N also offers 4WD in its top-spec variants.
On the other hand, the Scorpio Classic gets only one engine option, 2.2-litre mHawk CRDi diesel (132PS and 300Nm), with a 6-speed manual transmission. You also do not get a 4WD option.
Talking about features, the Scorpio N is equipped with LED projector headlamps, keyless entry with push-button start, connected car technology, powered driver seat, 7-inch TFT colour driver display, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and built-in navigation, 12-speaker Sony audio system, wireless charging, dual-zone climate control and Level 2 ADAS.
Since the Scorpio Classic is a relatively old SUV, the feature list is not very long. It offers bells and whistles like projector headlamps with LED DRLs, LED taillamps and 17-inch alloy wheels on the outside. Inside the cabin, you get a height-adjustable driver seat, a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system and automatic climate control. It also gets cruise control.
