Hyundai Motor India is planning to introduce at least five new models, including a new-generation version of an existing product, three mid-life enhancements of current models and a completely new product, by the end of the calendar year (CY) 2026.
Among the five models will be the new-generation Hyundai Venue, which is slated to be launched on October 24. According to two sources, the four other models will be the Hyundai Ioniq 5 facelift, Hyundai Exter facelift, Hyundai Verna facelift and a new sub-4 metre compact SUV.
A new-generation version, which is launched six to seven years after the initial market entry of any vehicle, brings significant changes to the design, features, technical specifications and, in certain cases, even the platform. In comparison, a mid-life enhancement is done three to four years after a vehicle is introduced, with some cosmetic changes and minor feature additions.
The introduction of these five new models is part of Hyundai's larger plan to launch 26 products in India by FY30. These 26 products, including 20 internal combustion engine (ICE) models and six electric vehicles (EVs), will be a mix of completely new models, new-generation models and mid-life enhancements.
The company also has plans to launch hybrids in India. Moneycontrol reported in June that Hyundai's largest-selling vehicle, the Creta, will get a hybrid powertrain.
One of the sources said that while the new-generation Venue will be manufactured at Hyundai's Talegaon plant (Pune), the new sub-4 metre compact SUV could also be produced at the same facility.
Hyundai has previously confirmed that vehicle production at the Talegaon plant, which it acquired from General Motors, will start in the December quarter of the current fiscal. The first phase will have an annual capacity of 1,74,000 units. In the second phase, the capacity will be enhanced to 2,50,000 units per year.
In June, the company officially started engine production at the Talegaon plant, which has an annual installed capacity of 1,50,000 engines.
Hyundai's Chennai plant currently has an annual installed production capacity of 8,24,000 units. Following the completion of the second phase at the Talegaon plant, the company's total capacity will reach 10,74,000 units per annum.
The new sub-4 metre compact SUV will sit between the Exter and the Venue in Hyundai's SUV line-up and rival the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, one of the sources said.
The sub-4 metre compact SUV segment is the most lucrative division in the SUV arena. At 10,84,611 units, it accounted for 45.84% of the overall SUV volumes in India in FY25. Apart from the Venue and the Fronx, it is home to popular brands like the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Tata Nexon, Kia Sonet, Mahindra XUV 3XO and Skoda Kylaq.
Hyundai's product and capacity expansion move follows increasing competition from Indian players like Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra.
With wholesales of 5,98,666 units in the domestic market, Hyundai was the second largest carmaker in India in FY25, ahead of Tata (5,53,585 units) and Mahindra (5,51,487 units).
However, Mahindra moved ahead in this tripartite struggle in Q1 FY26 with domestic volumes of 1,52,067 units, followed by Hyundai at 1,32,259 units and Tata at 1,29,369 units.
Hyundai currently offers two EVs -- Creta Electric and Ioniq 5. It has 12 ICE models -- Grand i10 Nios, i20, i20 N Line, Aura, Verna, Exter, Venue, Venue N Line, Creta, Creta N Line, Alcazar and Tucson.
