US President Barack Obama will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in September when he travels to Russia for the G20 summit, the White House said on Monday.

The United States is pressing Russia to use its influence to help reduce tensions with North Korea. Washington and Moscow are also at odds over the civil war in Syria.

The announcement of the September meeting came after Obama's national security adviser Tom Donilon held discussions with Putin and other leaders during a trip to Russia.

Those talks covered "the full range of bilateral and global issues in preparation for the meeting between President Obama and President Putin on the margins of the G8 Summit and a US - Russia bilateral summit in early September," White House spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said in a statement.

"The discussions were comprehensive and constructive," she said.

The White House has previously announced that Obama and Putin would meet together at the G8 summit in June in Northern Ireland. The September meeting would be their second this year.
