Vaibhav Taneja, Tesla’s Chief Financial Officer and one of Elon Musk’s most trusted executives, is now at the centre of Musk’s latest political venture - the newly launched America Party. Recently named as both Treasurer and Custodian of Records for the party, Taneja will oversee its finances and regulatory filings. From Delhi University to Tesla’s C-Suite
Vaibhav Taneja was born and raised in India, where he completed his bachelor’s degree in commerce from Delhi University. He became a Chartered Accountant (CA) in 2000, before moving to the United States, where he later earned the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credential in 2006.
In his early career days, Taneja worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) for 17 years, advising global clients on everything from financial controls to IPO preparation. His time at PwC spanned both India and the US, and gave him deep exposure to international finance and corporate governance.
In 2016, he made a major career move by joining SolarCity, the solar energy company founded by Elon Musk’s cousins. This decision would change the course of his professional life.
Rising through the ranks at Tesla
When Tesla acquired SolarCity in late 2016, Taneja moved over to Tesla, quickly proving his value. By 2017, he had been promoted to Corporate Controller – a key financial role within any company. Just two years later, in 2019, he became Tesla’s Chief Accounting Officer.
In August 2023, Taneja was appointed as Tesla’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) following the departure of long-time executive Zach Kirkhorn. As CFO, Taneja oversees Tesla’s entire global financial operation, including everything from investor relations to financial reporting, budgeting, and strategy. He plays a critical role in a company that is not only one of the most valuable in the world but also one of the most scrutinised.
Notably, Taneja has also been involved in Tesla’s India strategy, and in 2021, he was appointed Director of Tesla India Motors and Energy Pvt Ltd, Tesla’s official Indian subsidiary. His deep Indian roots and global financial experience make him a rare executive who bridges two rapidly growing markets: the US and India.
One of the highest-paid executives in the world
Earlier this year, Vaibhav Taneja made headlines for another reason—his paycheck. According to a report by The Washington Post, Taneja earned a staggering $139 million in 2024, making him one of the highest-paid executives in the tech world, surpassing even tech giants like Microsoft’s Satya Nadella and Google’s Sundar Pichai. Most of this came from stock options and equity grants tied to Tesla’s performance.
Stepping into politics with Musk
Taneja’s most surprising role yet may be his recent entry into the political sphere.
When Musk announced the launch of the America Party (AMEP) on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter), he described it as an effort to challenge the “one-party system” in the US. Musk said the party was created to “give Americans their freedom back” and hinted at a growing frustration with both Republicans and Democrats.
In official documents filed with the FEC, Taneja is named as the Treasurer and Custodian of Records – two roles that make him legally responsible for managing the party’s finances, overseeing political donations, ensuring compliance with campaign finance laws, and maintaining proper records for audits and transparency.
The filing also lists the party’s headquarters as 1 Rocket Road, Hawthorne – the same location as SpaceX’s headquarters – and names Musk as the party’s sole candidate.
Taneja’s appointment to such a crucial role in Musk’s political outfit signals something important: Musk is likely to run this party the same way he runs his companies – with a small, trusted group of loyal executives. Taneja, with his calm efficiency, financial expertise, and proven loyalty, fits right into that inner circle. It also highlights how Indian-origin professionals are playing increasingly central roles not just in global business, but now in American politics.
