A gruesome double murder in Bangladesh has once again raised questions over the safety of minorities in the country. A Muktijoddha, a freedom fighter of the 1971 Liberation War, and his wife were found dead in their home in Rangpur, both with their throats slit.
The victims were identified as 75-year-old Jogesh Chandra Roy and his wife 60-year-old Suborna Roy. Their bodies were discovered on Sunday inside their residence in the Uttar Rahimapur area of Kursha.
According to Dhaka-based daily Prothom Alo, neighbours and domestic help attempted to contact the couple on Sunday morning. When repeated calls received no response, they climbed over the locked gate using a ladder around 7.30 AM. Inside, they found Suborna Roy’s body in the kitchen and Jogesh Chandra Roy lying in the dining room. Both had been brutally killed the same way.
Minority violence already flagged by India
This killing comes at a time when India has repeatedly raised concerns over rising attacks on Hindus and other minority communities in Bangladesh. In August 2025, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh informed Parliament that India has flagged thousands of such incidents.
He stated, “The Government of India has shared its concerns on the matter with the Government of Bangladesh, including at the highest levels, with the expectation that the Government of Bangladesh will take all necessary measures to ensure safety and welfare of Hindus and other minorities.”
As per official data cited in Parliament, India has raised 3,582 cases of violence against minorities in Bangladesh since 2021.
Rangpur already on human rights watch radar
The incident has occurred in the same district recently highlighted by Human Rights Watch. The organisation reported that in July a mob vandalised at least 14 Hindu-owned homes in Rangpur.
With a freedom fighter and his wife murdered in their own home, questions are being asked yet again about whether Bangladesh is capable of protecting its minorities, even those who fought for the country’s independence.
The case adds to a disturbing pattern. Despite international appeals and repeated warnings, attacks continue, and justice remains uncertain for minority families living in fear across Bangladesh.
