Chinese tech giant Xiaomi’s next flagship smartphone series is set to launch this month, albeit with a major rebranding. While leaks of the Xiaomi 16 series' specifications have been spotted in the rumour mill for quite some time now. However, the company has now announced that it is jumping directly from the Xiaomi 15 generation to the new 17 series, matching Apple’s nomenclature with its recently launched iPhone 17 series.
Xiaomi skips a generation and proceeds with the 17 series launch: Key details
Xiaomi president Lu Weibing took to Weibo and revealed that the company is passing over the entire 16 series, by launching the 17 series in a few weeks, to position it directly against the iPhone 17 family, which launched earlier this month. He said that this upcoming lineup represents such a major generational leap in Xiaomi's five-year climb into the premium phone space.
Xiaomi has also changed its Weibo profile picture with a back design of an unreleased phone with Xiaomi 17 series written beside it. Like last year’s Xiaomi 15 lineup, the Xiaomi 17 series is expected to be introduced soon after the debut of Qualcomm’s next-generation high-end chipset, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite 5.
Further, according to tipster Abhishek Yadav, the Xiaomi 17 series will include the Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Pro, and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max smartphones. Moreover, the tipster also noted that the Xiaomi 17 Pro will be the brand's compact flagship smartphone this year, while the new Xiaomi 17 Pro Max will feature a large display, just like the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
