WhatsApp is testing a new feature for its Android app that will let users mute ‘everyone’ mentions in group chats, according to WABetaInfo. This option could reduce notification clutter in busy groups where members frequently tag all participants.
The feature was spotted in WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.25.27.1, which includes a new toggle under notification settings. By default, the option is off, and users must manually activate it to mute alerts triggered by @everyone mentions.
Currently, the @everyone mention can be used by any group member, not just admins, to notify all participants. While useful in some contexts, it has also been seen as disruptive when overused. The mute option is therefore being developed to give users more control over their chat experience.
Even with a group muted, users will still have the option to receive @everyone notifications if they wish, simply by adjusting the setting. For now, the feature is still in development and is not yet available to beta testers. Reports suggest it may become accessible in future app versions.
This update reflects WhatsApp’s ongoing effort to balance engagement in group conversations with personalisation, allowing people to decide how much they want to be disturbed by group-wide mentions.
