Sony’s PlayStation 5 has enjoyed a strong run since its launch in 2020, with nearly 75 million units sold worldwide. Despite the challenges posed by the global chip shortage and the COVID-19 pandemic, the PS5 remains a critical part of Sony’s gaming strategy. While the PlayStation 6 is in development, Sony confirms that the PS5 won’t be phased out immediately.

The PS5 is Sony’s fastest-selling console and continues to receive updates and new models. Sony introduced the PS5 Slim in 2023, followed by the PS5 Pro in 2024, offering improved performance and design tweaks aimed at a wide range of gamers.

These additions reflect Sony’s commitment to supporting the PS5 even as it prepares for the next generation.

Hideaki Nishino, who heads the Platform Business Group at Sony Interactive Entertainment, recently addressed the future of the PS5 in an interview with Japanese publication Famitsu. According to Nishino, the PS5 will follow the same path as the PS4, which continued to receive support and production well into the next console cycle.
