Study shows durability is now a top smartphone priority, claims report

A new “India Smartphone Durability Consumer Study 2025” by Counterpoint Research shows that durability isn’t just a spec on a box — it’s a daily worry for users. Surveying more than 4,500 respondents across 26 cities, the study reveals how fragile devices affect not just spending but also stress levels, habits, and even peace of mind.

Everyday use brings higher risk
Phones are constantly exposed: 85% use them with wet or oily hands, whether cooking, commuting, or in rain. With 52% relying on smartphones for work and life routines, accidental damage translates into major disruption.

Repairs add hidden costs to ownership
Damage takes a financial toll too. 42% reported repair bills between Rs 2,001–5,000, one in five spent Rs 5,001–10,000, while 8% shelled out over Rs 10,000 — a sharp burden for something used every day.

Smartphone fragility fuels daily anxiety
Nearly 78% avoid using phones in rain, heat or near water due to fear of damage. Emotional responses are strong — 56% feel upset, 39% panic, and just 5% remain indifferent when their phones crack or fall.

Durability tied to data and peace of mind
It’s not just hardware loss — 72% worry about losing personal data like photos and contacts. Tellingly, 40% would pay over Rs 5,000 to recover data after device damage, underscoring durability’s link to peace of mind. The study was done by Oppo and Counterpoint Research.
