Sam Altman says he’s not a fan of smart glasses, teases upcoming OpenAI device

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman made it clear this week that he’s not into smart glasses. Speaking to reporters at the Sun Valley conference, Altman showed up wearing a bold-looking pair of glasses but quickly clarified that they weren’t “smart.”

“I don’t like smart glasses,” he said, pointing out that the design and feel of the current options just don’t appeal to him. While he didn’t go into detail, it’s clear Altman thinks the form factor hasn’t quite hit the mark yet, according to Bloomberg.

Altman also gave a small teaser about OpenAI’s upcoming hardware, saying only that “it’s going to be great.” He didn’t reveal anything else about the product, but his confidence suggests something big might be on the way, possibly something that avoids the smart glasses look altogether.

There is a growing talent war between OpenAI and Meta. Both companies have been competing fiercely to hire top engineers and researchers in the AI space. While he didn’t name names or dive deep into the rivalry, Altman acknowledged that the competition for talent is real and intense.
