Perplexity AI has begun sending early access invites for its Comet browser on Android, marking the company’s next big step in challenging Google’s dominance in web browsing. The San Francisco-based AI startup had earlier rolled out Comet for Windows and macOS, and is now gradually expanding access to mobile users.
Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas confirmed the Android rollout in a post on X, saying that the first wave of invites has gone out to a small group of early testers. Interested users can sign up through the Google Play Store or the official Comet website. According to Srinivas, preference will be given to active Perplexity users and paid subscribers under the Pro or Max plans.
“Comet Android early invites are going out. If you want to maximise your chances for early access and shaping how the future of mobile browsing looks like—it all comes down to your Perplexity Android usage and Pro/Max user status! More invites will go out soon,” Srinivas wrote.
The launch comes as Perplexity positions itself as a serious alternative to Google Chrome, which continues to dominate mobile browsing. Data from SimilarWeb shows Chrome holds a 60.45% market share, followed by Safari at 31.22%, Samsung Internet at 4.98%, Opera at 1.13%, and Firefox at just 0.38%. Perplexity aims to challenge this landscape by integrating AI deeply into the browsing experience, building on its success with its AI-powered search assistant that rivals Google Search.
Comet is an “agentic AI browser” capable of performing tasks on behalf of users — from summarising webpages and comparing products to automating workflows like booking hotels, scheduling meetings, and sending emails. The idea is to turn the browser into an intelligent digital assistant rather than a passive tool.
However, this new approach has also drawn scrutiny. Researchers at Brave recently exposed critical vulnerabilities in agentic AI browsers, showing how hidden commands on webpages could trick AI agents into executing unintended actions, such as sending private emails or accessing financial data. In response, Perplexity’s own security team admitted the threat’s seriousness, saying in a recent blog post that such risks “won’t be solved through conventional adversarial testing (red teams)” and will require “rethinking security from the ground up.”
Despite these challenges, Perplexity’s Android expansion signals growing confidence in its vision of AI-driven web browsing. If Comet can overcome the technical and trust barriers, it could become the first true challenger to Chrome’s decade-long reign.
