OpenAI has brought in a big name from the tech world to help lead its next chapter. Fidji Simo, the current CEO of Instacart and former head of the Facebook app, is joining OpenAI as CEO of Applications, reporting directly to Sam Altman.
Altman shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), expressing his excitement about the move. “So excited that @fidjissimo is joining OpenAI in a new role: CEO of Applications, reporting to me,” he wrote. “Fidji is exceptional; we have worked together on OpenAI for the past year and I have observed her deep commitment to our mission.”
While Altman will remain CEO of OpenAI overall, he said this new leadership structure will allow him to focus more on the company’s core priorities—research, compute, and safety—especially as the team moves closer to building superintelligence.
“These are critical as we approach superintelligence,” he wrote.
Simo’s new role will focus on scaling OpenAI’s applications, including popular products like ChatGPT. Her experience leading large consumer tech platforms makes her a strong fit for the job, especially as OpenAI aims to grow “10x—or 100x,” as Altman put it.
The announcement hints OpenAI’s push to build out its product ecosystem while also focusing on safety and technical progress. No timeline has been shared yet for when Simo will begin her new role.
