Spotify’s AI-powered DJ is stepping up its game. The popular music feature — known for delivering rather accurate recommendations with a touch of human-like commentary — is now taking voice requests from Premium users, unlocking a more interactive and customised listening experience.
Starting this week, Premium subscribers in over 60 markets (the feature isn’t available in India) can talk directly to the DJ and ask for music based on mood, genre, artist, or activity. Think: “Give me some indie vibes for a rainy evening,” or “Play high-energy tracks for a gym session.”
The AI then reworks your session on the fly, factoring in listening history, preferences, and global editorial insights. In other words, it’s like texting a friend who’s both a music nerd and a mind reader.
Spotify says DJ usage has nearly doubled in the past year, confirming its role as a fan favorite for listeners looking to offload the mental load of music selection. The English-speaking DJ, voiced by Spotify’s Xavier “X” Jernigan, isn’t just spinning tunes anymore — it’s now engaging in real-time feedback loops with users. Hold the DJ button, make your request, and wait for the beep. That’s the cue DJ’s listening.
To try it out, just search “DJ” in the Spotify app, hit play, and start vibing. You can use your voice to change direction mid-session or skip sections with a tap if you’re not feeling it.
While it’s still in beta — and won’t cater to non-music asks like podcasts or audiobooks — the update marks a major leap in personalized audio.
