Apple had announced the availability of game streaming services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce Now on its App Store at the start of this year. This was a welcome move for many cloud gaming users, as previously gamers had to rely on the web app, which barred a more seamless integration like any native app on iPhones and iPads to access these services.
However, these apps are yet to be released on the iOS App Store. Microsoft submitted its comments on the matter in late July, highlighting Apple’s unethical and unfeasible behavior. The company also raised issues with several guidelines of Apple that limit its ability to distribute and operate a Cloud Gaming iOS native app.
According to a new report by The Verge, Microsoft feels that Apple’s continuing to charge a 30% IAP commission fee on all such subscription-based cloud services continues to represent an obstacle to such gaming services’ availability. Microsoft also complains about the lack of support for alternative app stores and the limitations of web apps, which aren’t able to access the hardware information of the native device.
However, Apple has rebuffed these claims and added that it "supports and encourages" cloud gaming services on iOS and that there are successful cloud gaming services on its platform, such as Antstream. The Cupertino-based tech giant has also claimed that Microsoft has not engaged with them despite multiple efforts to work together to make cloud gaming successful on iOS.
CMA (Competition and Markets Authority) has now set a deadline for both companies to respond to these claims before a provisional decision report is released in November this year.
