Meta’s Threads surges past 400 million monthly users with steady updates

Meta’s Threads has crossed 400 million monthly active users, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced today — a 50 million increase since April. The milestone comes as the X competitor celebrates its second anniversary, bolstered by a string of well-received updates.

The last user count Meta disclosed was on April 30 during its Q1 2025 earnings call, when Threads stood at 350 million MAUs. That was already up from 320 million in late January. If growth continues at this pace, the app could add more than 100 million monthly users in 2025, narrowing the gap with X.

X, now privately held, no longer publishes verifiable user figures. Its last public claim came from then-CEO Linda Yaccarino in April, who said the platform had “nearly 600 million” MAUs — only slightly higher than the 586 million she reported in January.

Threads’ recent momentum is tied to a series of feature rollouts, including its own direct messaging system independent of Instagram, spoiler tagging, a dedicated fediverse feed, and a highlighting tool. While modest individually, the changes signal a shift in Meta’s approach — tailoring the app more to user feedback and making it more enticing for those considering leaving X.
